The 2021 “Costas Lymbouris and Niki Georgiou Award for Contribution to Sport” of the C.C. of AKEL awarded to Loukas Kalogerou and Nikos Yatrou

Two sportsmen who have served Cypriot sport and the country’s education have been awarded this year’s “Costas Lymbouris and Niki Georgiou Award for Contribution to Sport” of the Central Committee of AKEL.

Loukas Kalogerou, became an athletic giant in athletics, where he also contributed for decades to the sport as a coach. He was a tremendous athlete with rich physical gifts that made him a champion in the sport of Decathlon for 10 consecutive years, in addition to his successes recorded in other sports. He also excelled in team sports as an athlete and coach with great success. He served Cypriot education as a teacher of Physical Education and retired with the title of Gymnastics Master, earning respect from both his students and colleagues.

The second honoree is pioneering volunteer Nikos Yatrou, who is being honored for his many years of service to women’s and rural football at all levels. He founded one of the first women’s teams, where he served as coach and later President. He served rural football for 10 years from the arena of POEL, eventually serving as President and General Secretary of STOK. Despite the persecution and injustices against him during his early years as a teacher, he managed to nurture correctly thousands of children.

The “Costas Lymbouris and Niki Georgiou Award for Contribution to Sport” was established in 2010 by the Central Committee of AKEL and aims to reward individuals for their contribution to the development of Sports in our country and the promotion of the sporting ideal.

This year’s award event will take place on Monday 6th December 2021, at the Journalists’ Centre in Nicosia. More details about the event will be announced soon.
