The crime of the Coop Bank sell-off must not go unpunished

Statement by Aristos Damianou, AKEL MP after the meeting of the Parliamentary Legal Affairs Committee

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 12th March 2021, Nicosia

As everyone knows, the conclusion  of the committee of inquiry on the collapse of the Coop Bank headed by Giorgos Aresti substantiates the political responsibilities of the government ruling forces and by name of the then Minister of Finance, as well as the President of the Republic himself. Responsibilities that not only were not taken on by them, but instead they are shamelessly boasting that if they had a second chance they would do the same again.

At the same time, we point out a serious delay in the investigation of what stems from the findings about the possibility of commission of civil and criminal offences, for which the authorities must give explanations. The Coop Bank scandal cannot and must not go unpunished. The Anastasiades-DISY government must not be allowed to cover up this scandal, by following its familiar tactics as it did with the banking scandal, but also in the past with the Stock Exchange scandal.

Studying the possibility of the limitation period for actionable rights, the General Secretary of AKEL Andros Kyprianou, submitted a specific proposal for a twelve-month extension of the limitation period for actionable rights that may arise in relation to the Coop Bank and today in the Legal Affairs Committee we agreed that AKEL’s proposal will be discussed as a priority on 19th March so that it will be brought as soon as possible before the Plenary of the House of Representatives.
