The government needs to elaborate a comprehensive plan to provide support towards the free areas of the Famagusta region

Statements by the General Secretary of AKEL A.Kyprianou after visiting the open air People’s Market of Deryneia

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 13th March 2021, Nicosia

“I want to congratulate the Municipality of Deryneia for the fact that the open air People’s Market only has producers, which is extremely important especially in the very difficult conditions the country is going through.

Furthermore, I’d also say that the Ministry of Agriculture has promised to grant an assistance of 200,000 euros for the construction of the appropriate infrastructures, so that the People’s market can operate without any problems during the winter period too. I hope and wish the Minister will fulfill this promise, something he has not done so far.

The free areas of the Famagusta region is an area which was mainly reliant on tourism. It is no exaggeration to say that 90-95% of its revenue came from tourism. Farmers, of course, in addition to the working people in the tourist sector had the opportunity to sell their products to tourists who were coming to Cyprus and to the restaurants and of course to the hotels that accommodated tourists.

The whole region has suffered enormous consequences due to the Covid 19 pandemic. The government needs to elaborate a comprehensive plan to provide support towards the free areas of the Famagusta region, both to the tourist and agricultural sector. We believe that this is the only way people will be able to overcome the difficulties they are facing right now and carry on with their work even after the end of the pandemic.”
