The Anastasiades government is entangling Cyprus in dangerous confrontations

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 9 May 2018, Nicosia

The decision by the US yesterday to withdraw unilaterally from the agreement on the nuclear program of Iran poses a threat to peace and security throughout the region. It is once again quite clear which power constitutes a real danger to humanity. This is a decision that is determined by the demands and interests of Israel and Saudi Arabia. Indicative of the hypocrisy is the fact that the country of our region that demonstrably has an illegal nuclear arsenal and refuses to sign the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty is Israel. Nonetheless, it receives the full and timeless protection of the US and its allies.

President Anastasiades at the Cyprus-Greece-Israel Tripartite Meeting yesterday chose not to disassociate himself from the aggressive Israeli line against Iran, but to indirectly provide cover to Israel’s arguments.

Once again, the Anastasiades government is entangling Cyprus in foreign plans and dangerous confrontations that have nothing to do with the interests of the Cypriot people and positions of principles on international relations. What is the position of the Anastasiades government in relation to the agreement on Iran’s nuclear program? Does the Cypriot government have a position on this critical issue that threatens our entire region or does it confine itself to an alignment with the positions of foreign governments without saying a word? The Anastasiades government must give a reply to these questions.
