The continuation of a protracted stalemate will only succeed in leading things closer towards a definitive partition

The General Secretary of AKEL A. Kyprianou replies to journalist’s questions

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 11 May 2018

On AKEL’s meeting with the Turkish Cypriot Communal Democracy Party (TDP)

Question: You will soon have a meeting with TDP in the occupied areas. What is the purpose of this meeting?

AK: We are very worried about developments on the Cyprus problem or to be precise about the lack of developments in the Cyprus problem. We believe that the continuation of a protracted stalemate will only succeed in leading things closer towards a definitive partition, something that would be disastrous for Cyprus. Each and every one of us must realize our responsibilities are great – and above all those of the President of the Republic – to prevent such a development.

We are having discussions with Turkish Cypriot political parties, We shall meet with the Communal Democracy Party today, Mr. Akinci’s party, to continue the discussions on how we can contribute towards the resumption of substantive negotiations on the basis of what the Secretary-General of the United Nations demands. I of course clarify that we unfortunately aren’t the ones that decide about what will happen with regards the Cyprus problem. The decisions are taken by the leaders of the two communities and they have the responsibility as to how things will evolve.

I repeat and am adamant that these are critical and very decisive times for the future and prospects of our country and people. I wish and hope that both leaders, but also political party leaders in the two communities, will realise their responsibilities towards the country and our people.
