AKEL on EU-Turkey summit
Statement of Stefanos Stefanou, AKEL Political Bureau member
AKEL C.C. Press Office, 8th March 2016, Nicosia
The European Union cannot proceed to unfreeze Turkey’s accession chapters relating to Turkey’s obligations on Cyprus in return for its cooperation of the refugee issue.
The unfreezing of these chapters can proceed when and if Turkey decides to fulfill its obligations on Cyprus.
On the EU-Refugee crisis
The European Union must resolutely and actively support Greece in addressing the refugee crisis. The efforts of certain EU Member States to close the “Balkan corridor” for refugees will harm Greece, but also the principles of solidarity and humanism which the EU must at last serve.
