Meeting between AKEL and the United Cyprus Party (BKP)

 

The struggle for the reunification of Cyprus is common

A meeting took place today between an AKEL delegation, headed by the General Secretary of the C.C. of the Party Stefanos Stefanou, and the leadership of the Turkish Cypriot United Cyprus Party (BKP), headed by its President Izzet Izcan, at their offices in Nicosia.

During the meeting, the two Parties agreed that it is urgent to intensify the common struggle of the progressive forces of the two communities to reverse the negative climate surrounding the Cyprus problem. This is a struggle aiming at bringing the discussion for the solution of the Cyprus problem back on the basis of the relevant resolutions of the UN, the High-Level Agreements, the convergences that have been recorded so far between the two sides and the Guterres Framework.

At the same time, the two Parties agreed that it is necessary to fight to keep the hope for a solution and reunification alive. Towards this end, the role of the progressive forces for the rapprochement and contacts between the two communities at various levels is imperative and must be expanded.

In addition, a number of other issues of concern to the Turkish Cypriot community were discussed, primarily, such as Turkey’s interventions in the internal affairs of the Turkish Cypriot community, the struggle of the Turkish Cypriot community to salvage its identity and will, the “naturalization” of settlers and the demographic alteration of the Turkish Cypriot community.

The meeting was also attended on behalf of AKEL by the Head of the Cyprus Problem Office and member of the Central Secretariat of AKEL, Toumazos Tsielepis, as well as the Head of the Rapprochement Bureau of AKEL and member of the Central Committee of AKEL Elias Demetriou.
