Working people need support and protection now and not in some indefinite future
AKEL C.C. Press Office, 14th January 2021, Nicosia
The Anastasiades government’s decision to refer the introduction of minimum wages to the future until full employment conditions are created, in reality leaves thousands of working people unprotected from exploitation and arbitrariness, at a time when a shield protecting workers must be raised. The government refuses to realize that it isn’t in times of growth, but in times of crisis – such as the phase we are currently going through – that the intervention of the state is most needed to protect working people and regulate labour relations.
AKEL supports the demands of the trade union movement for a dialogue to begin aiming at the formation of mechanisms for the legislative safeguarding of elementary rights for all working people who are not covered by collective agreements and contracts. In cooperation with the trade union movement, AKEL will take initiatives in this direction, both inside and outside Parliament.
The working people of our country need support and protection now and not in some indefinite future.
