With the fervent adoration of NATO as his guide, N. Christodoulides is experimenting with Cyprus’ fate
9 October 2025, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia
President Christodoulides never misses an opportunity to repeat his yearning to make Cyprus a member of NATO. However, Mr. Christodoulides’ dogmatic insistence on tying Cyprus either to NATO, to Israel, or anywhere else he is willing to unconditionally submit, doesn’t serve the best interests of our country and our people.
How exactly will NATO protect Cyprus from Turkey’s aggressiveness when NATO’s deputy commander in the region is Turkey itself?
Can the Republic of Cyprus really afford to completely break off relations with the permanent members of the UN Security Council that aren’t members of NATO?
When and where has NATO ever shown any interest in peace and the application of international law, which is precisely what Cyprus needs?
How does joining a military alliance fit in with the position of demilitarization as part of the solution to the Cyprus problem, as stipulated in the UN Security Council Resolutions?
Doesn’t Mr. Christodoulides realize that, no matter how subservient his government may be, Turkey was and is more important to US-NATO interests?
What is certain is that when Mr. Christodoulides was seeking the vote of the Cypriot people before the presidential elections, he acknowledged that it was not in our country’s interest to join an organization where Turkey has the upper hand. Now, he probably does not understand or doesn’t remember what is in Cyprus’ best interests. Guided by the fervent admiration of NATO and illusions, N. Christodoulides is experimenting with our country’s fate.
