AKEL on statements made by the Press Spokesperson of the Russian Federation’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs

The debate surrounding the statements made by the Press Spokesperson of the Russian Federation’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs render it necessary to remind everyone that the fascist coup and the Turkish invasion of 1974 were integral parts of the unified NATO plan for the partition of Cyprus.

The military junta in Athens, in collaboration with EOKA B, overthrew the constitutional order with the execution of the coup d’état of 15 July 1974, giving Turkey the pretext and the “green light” to invade the island, sowing havoc and destruction. Turkey did not restore the constitutional order that the coup had overthrown, nor did it ever have such an objective. After all, constitutional order had been restored initially with the removal of the traitor Sampson and definitively with the return of Makarios to Cyprus and by assuming the Presidency in December 1974. However, Turkey has remained an illegal occupying and colonizing power in our homeland for half a century.
