“With our roots as bridges, we march forward to the future” AKEL announces Bicommunal Festival of Culture

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 3rd April 2017, Nicosia

cyprus cprAKEL announces the organization of a Bicommunal Festival of Culture under the slogan “With our roots as bridges, we march forward to the future” and addresses an open invitation to Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot artists and people of culture to participate in the wide variety of activities planned. The Bicommunal Festival of Culture will last until the end of May.

The common roots of Greek Cypriots, Turkish Cypriots and the other communities in our culture and popular tradition, in the struggles for life, the rights of the people and worker’s gains, but also our common dreams for the common homeland and peace are the bridges to the beautiful future we aspire to, to the future we are marching towards. Our concern is for the future generations and the desire to live in conditions of security, freedom, justice and progress.

Culture always unites people, heals wounds and mobilizes more and more forces to the struggle for a better and humane life. It is a significant weapon in our people’s struggle for the reunification of our country. It represents a break with a historical period where we have suffered so much pain and tears, with so much blood spilled and on many ruins, the consequence of a terrible tragedy directed by imperialism and its executioners, that is the fascists and chauvinists in both communities.

This initiative was taken by the Bureau of Cultural Affairs and the Bureau for Rapprochement of the C.C. of AKEL, as well as the People’s Movement of the Left in general. We are also seeking the participation of other political forces, mass organizations, organized groups, people of the arts and letters from all the communities in Cyprus and all those who care about a common reunified homeland. The Festival will include various activities and events in all the districts and regions of Cyprus

The content of the events includes music, dance, theatre, poetry, films and documentaries, painting, photographic and sculpture exhibitions, book presentations, discussions, lectures, visits and lectures on historical monuments that have recently been renovated under the Bicommunal Commission on Cultural Heritage. There will also be tributes to artists who have left their mark in the arts and culture of Cyprus.

The events will reach a climax with the big Festival to be held on Sunday 21st May at Acropolis Park, Nicosia. At the festival there will be a centre stage for musical concerts, as well as stands that will host people of culture to present their work.

We call on organized groups and artists, especially young people of the arts and letters who wish to do so, to organize their own activity or participate in the events to be held to send their proposals to the following e-mail: politistikografeio@marioskosma.com or fax: 22767144.
