Will the government proceed to tax the exorbitant profits of banks and energy companies – yes or no?

Statement by AKEL C.C. Spokesperson Giorgos Koukoumas

The country’s private banks are announcing exorbitant profits of hundreds of millions of euros and, at the same time, admitting that these profits are largely due to the increase in interest rates.

AKEL’s proposal to tax the banks’ exorbitant profits – as well as those of energy companies – has never been more urgent than now. With the resources that the state will derive from this action, it will be able to finance a drastic anti-austerity package that will bring real relief to households and working people. Otherwise, we will be left with the inadequate measures that were announced the day before yesterday by Mr. Christodoulides, which for the overwhelming majority of society are not even a painkiller.

The government cannot hide any longer on this issue. It must provide an answer as to its intentions:

Will it proceed it tax the exorbitant profits of the banks and energy companies – yes or no?
