Wikileaks revelations show that the Troika and its policies do not promote a country’s prosperity

Statement of Georgos Loucaides, AKEL C.C. Spokesperson

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 3rd April 2016, Nicosia

wikileaks econ intToday the ideological allies of the Troika and the Memoranda must be feeling uneasy. They were the ones who were repeatedly stating that the Memorandum could have been their own ideological manifesto; the same forces which with regards the corresponding blackmail exerted against Cyprus in October 2012 sided with the blackmailers.

Those forces and circles, which also co-signed the Cyprus Memorandum, are recorded in the WikiLeaks revelations as plotting to provoke a “credit event”, namely the bankruptcy of Greece. That is to say they were planning to bring even more great misery to the Greek people. All of this in the name of the dogmatic adherence to the recipes of neo-liberalism.

The Wikileaks revelations should convince even the most benevolent citizens that the Troika and its policies do not aim to promote a country’s prosperity. On the contrary the Memorandum brought to Cyprus too deep recession and unprecedented economic inequality. It benefited a privileged few and harmed, and continues to harm, society as a whole.
