Vulgar reversal of reality and a shameful act for our country
The resolution tabled by DISY, DIKO, far-right ELAM, DYPA on Gaza is a vulgar reversal of reality and shames our country
5 April 2024, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia
The resolution approved yesterday by DISY, DIKO, far-right ELAM and DYPA parties in Parliament on the situation in Gaza is a vulgar reversal of the dramatic reality that is happening right next to us and represents a monument to hypocrisy. At a time when the Palestinian people count more than 30 000 dead and are suffering an ongoing genocide at the hands of Israel’s murderous fury, the four political parties have presented a resolution that does not even mention the word “Palestine” and “Palestinians”, neither recognises nor denounces any of the crimes committed by Israel, nor even calls on the Israeli government to comply with international law, to stop using the deprivation of food and humanitarian aid as a weapon of war, to refrain from attacking Rafah or to do anything. There is also no mention whatsoever in the resolution of the occupation and colonalisation of Palestinian territories by the State of Israel.
The same parties rejected the Resolution submitted by AKEL, which is in line with international law, humanitarian law, the Resolutions of the UN and the practical measures that the international community must take to end Israel’s aggression.
Yesterday’s vote confirmed once again that the government and the majority in the country’s Parliament are among the few in the world who refuse to utter even the slightest criticism of Israel and of the murderer-in-chief Netanyahu, who is committing bloody massacres in Gaza, whilst at the same time seeking to provoke a regional conflict in the region. Apart from their incomprehensible insensitivity to the unprecedented humanitarian drama that is
taking place right next to our country, these forces – the coalition government, Right-wing DISY party and far-right ELAM – are nullifying the credibility of the Republic of Cyprus, which for decades has based its struggle on international law and the Resolutions of the UN.
AKEL will continue to join the millions of people around the world who are demanding an immediate and permanent ceasefire, an end to the genocide in Gaza, the termination of the Israeli occupation and colonisation, an independent Palestinian state on the 1967 borders and with East Jerusalem as its capital.
