US once more against International Law – Illegal recognition of Israel’s sovereignty in the Occupied for 52 Years Syrian Golan Heights
AKEL C.C. Press Office, 26 March 2019, Nicosia
The US through its President’s “twitter” account proceeded on 21th March to yet another action that constitutes a flagrant violation of International Law and threatens to further ignite the region. The announcement that after 52 years (that is, after 52 years of Israeli occupation) the time has come for the United States of America to fully recognize Israel’s sovereignty over the Golan Heights, recognizes the occupation and violates International Law and breaches numerous decisions approved by the UN Security Council.
At a time when Syria is gradually regaining its sovereignty over its territories occupied by the ‘Islamic State’, and instead of assisting the stabilisation of the region, the United States are declaring that the recognition of Israel’s sovereignty over the Occupied Golan Syrian Heights is vitally important from a strategic and security point of view for the State of Israel and the stability of the region.
Following the illegal recognition of Jerusalem as the indivisible capital of Israel and the transfer of their Embassy there a year ago, which provoked the outrage of the Palestinian people and international condemnation, this latest move leaves no doubt whatsoever as to the US government’s real intentions. On the one hand, the further deterioration of the situation in the region and continuation of the bloodshed for the sake of the interests of the US and their allies, and on the other hand, this move throws a life jacket to the Israeli Prime Minister in the upcoming parliamentary elections on 9th April.
The Government of the Republic of Cyprus, itself also the victim of a foreign occupation, must denounce and act against this decision, declaring its respect for the territorial integrity of Syria.
AKEL denounces in the strongest possible terms this action by the US and demands its immediate revocation. It reiterates the need for the respect of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Syria, as well as expressing its solidarity with the country’s much suffering people. At the same time, AKEL reiterates its support for the struggle of the Palestinian people to end the Israeli occupation and establish an independent Palestinian state on the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as the capital.
