AKEL on the International Day of Action Against Racism and Fascism
AKEL C.C. Press Office, 21 March 2019, Nicosia
The 21st March is the International Day of Action Against Racism. On this occasion, thousands of people across Europe and the rest of the world participate in protests and marches against racism and fascism. AKEL, along with other organizations, join our voice and demonstrate our commitment to the struggle against these inhumane ideologies; a struggle which today is becoming even more imperative and needs to be continuous and uncompromising.
The root causes that are driving millions of people to leave their home and family are not only not being eliminated, but are increasing and forcing more and more to become refugees and migrate. Furthermore, the same ruling circles responsible for creating this situation, are promoting anti-immigration policies and racist rhetoric, condemning these people to poverty and exploitation. With such policies, ultra-right, neo-Nazi and fascist organizations and parties are growing and intensifying their attacks, engaging in daily violence against refugee and migrant groups and against all those who support them.
Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots are uniting their voice with the voice of progressive forces all over Europe and the world by participating in this international mobilization. AKEL, in cooperation with other organizations, is organizing an anti-racist, anti-fascist march on Saturday 23 March at 11:00 am, through Ledra Street leading to Faneromeni Square. The march will start at the “OCHI” roundabout.
We call on all progressive citizens, migrants and refugees living in Cyprus to participate in this bi-communal march so that we turn it into a rally for peace, democracy, equal treatment, human rights and social solidarity.
