UN Advisor’s equal distance policy does not serve prospects for solving Cyprus Problem

Statement of Stefanos Stefanou, member of the Political Bureau

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 27th January 2015, Nicosia

eiden unThe United Nations Special Adviser to the Secretary-General on Cyprus  in his statements made today with regards the Cyprus problem once again adopted a stand of equal distance between the victim and perpetrator at a time when Turkey continues to violate the sovereign rights of the Republic of Cyprus. The policy of equal distance followed by Espen Barth Eidein in reality represents a policy of equal distance between International Law – whose guardian is the United Nations – and Turkey’s illegal actions. Such approaches do not serve the prospect of solving the Cyprus problem.

The UN Secretary-General’s Special Adviser on Cyprus in his statements stresses once again that President Anastasiades has accepted to put the issue of natural gas on the negotiating table, violating the “red line” that he himself had set with the agreement of the political parties. Whereas the President of the Republic made this concession, Turkey is continuing – without any political cost – to violate International Law and carry out illegal actions against the Republic of Cyprus.

It is evident that President Anastasiades’ policy on the Cyprus problem has not only not yielded results, but instead has put the Greek Cypriot side in a very difficult position.
