Turkey’s water project deepens further dependency of occupied areas and their gradual integration

Statement of Georgos Loucaides, AKEL Press Spokesperson

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 16th October 2015, Nicosia

cpr turkey-water-subsea-pipelineThe planned festivities for tomorrow’s opening of the project to transfer water from Turkey to the occupied areas again brings to the fore the parameters and ramifications of this development.

Firstly, the fact that the project was implemented in violation of the sovereign rights of the Republic of Cyprus.

Secondly, and most importantly, the absolute control of the project by Turkey in conditions of an ongoing occupation is a new fait accompli that further deepens the dependency and gradual integration of the occupied areas to Turkey.

Thirdly, this negative development is a reaffirmation of the need to find a solution as soon as possible to free us from the occupation and its faits accomplis. This is the only way to alleviate the negative aspects we have mentioned and for the whole of Cyprus to benefit from the transport of water from Turkey.
