Turkey is escalating its aggression in all directions

A final partition means having Turkey next to us, permanently and forever and a 180 km border with Turkey

Statements by the General Secretary of AKEL A.Kyprianou on the Cyprus problem

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 16th April 2021, Nicosia

It is a fact that Turkey is escalating its aggression in all directions. He considers that it is a regional superpower. It has a mentality like the ‘bully of the village’ as a Cypriot saying goes and it considers that it can behave to everyone in the same authoritarian and arrogant way.

The reaction of the Greek Foreign Minister is justified regardless of whether he went beyond the diplomatic norm. The concern expressed by some here in Cyprus is how can we enter into talks with this Turkey to solve the Cyprus problem is also justified.

We have absolutely no doubt whatsoever that we will have problems in our effort to solve the Cyprus problem as developments have evolved and bearing in mind the aggression and provocation shown by Turkey, as well as the unacceptable demands it is setting as a demand for the solution of the Cyprus issue.

What is the other option?

If we do not solve the Cyprus problem, we will head towards the definitive partition of Cyprus. The final partition of our country means that we will have Turkey next to us, permanently and forever. It means we will have a 180 km border with Turkey.

Is that what we want?

Is this the fate we reserve for our country and children?

We are not going to fatally accept such a negative development.

We will struggle to achieve a solution that will free us from the occupation and from the right of any power to intervene in our internal affairs.
