There must be a ceiling on charges for coronavirus tests

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 6th April 2020, Nicosia

AKEL has received complaints from citizens about clinical laboratories over-charging for conducting tests to verify coronavirus infection. The complaints, on the one hand, concern different charges by laboratories that may differ significantly from each other. On the other hand, the complaints also concern over-charges for the cheap, fast antibody test that in some cases rises to the price charged for the much more expensive molecular test.

AKEL, having in mind that we are up against a serious public health issue, calls on the Ministry of Health to proceed with determination to set a ceiling on charges for the coronavirus test.

AKEL also calls on the Ministry of Health and the Health Insurance Agency to ensure the overseeing of the entire process, not only to protect citizens from potential profiteering and price speculation, but also that only those who need to do so should undergo a test, based on relevant protocols and procedures. The involvement and utilization of general practitioners is imperative towards this end.
