Does dialogue and cooperation to deal with the situation have any meaning for the government?

Statement by AKEL C.C. Spokesperson Stefanos Stefanou on Minister of Finance interview

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 5th April 2020, Nicosia

Before the opposition parties submit their proposals on the economy and society, the Finance Minister has concluded that they are “totally unfeasible” and that their adoption would “lead to bankruptcy”. This is precisely what the Minister suggested today in his interview with “Phileleftheros” newspaper.

We hope that the Minister’s position will not be an indication that the government has no intention whatsoever to even listen to the proposals of the opposition parties and that it rejects them beforehand.

It is a contradiction in terms, but also unacceptable, on the one hand for the government to be calling for everyone’s cooperation in addressing the situation, to be thanking the parties that have contributed to the formulation of the first support package (this was done yesterday by the government spokesman) and on the other hand for the government to consider that its own proposals are the only ones that can be accepted and that the different proposals are “catastrophic”.

Despite the fact that the government does not seem to have the will to seriously discuss any proposals other than its own, AKEL will submit the proposal it has elaborated with the help of economists. AKEL’s proposal includes a combination of measures aimed at alleviating the problems and creating the preconditions for a speedy recovery of the economy after the end of the coronavirus crisis.

We wonder: will the debate we are asking for on the Plan to address the crisis in the end have any meaning or will it take place just for communication purposes?
