The two state solution was only ever discussed during Anastasiades’ Presidency

AKEL C.C. Spokesperson Stefanos Stefanou replies to the President of the Republic on the Cyprus problem

21st May 2021, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia

We remind Mr. Anastasiades that for five years he had as an interlocutor in front of him a Turkish Cypriot leader who wanted a solution, Mustafa Akinci, but he allowed time after the failure of Crans Montana to go by unexploited and without taking any substantial initiative. It is during this time that the President of the Republic disappeared bi-zonal, bi-communal federation from his rhetoric.

We remind Mr. Anastasiades that he inherited from his predecessor D.Christofias an important legacy for the achievement of a solution – the convergences that were recorded – but he didn’t make use of them. He remembers these convergences only when he is in a difficult position.

The two states solution, which is unacceptable, was discussed only during his Presidency. It has never ever before been raised officially for discussion. Today it is being raised by Turkey. Is Turkey doing so by chance?

AKEL has never agreed to even discuss such a solution. Can the President himself claim to for himself?

We have never asked the President to accept the proposals that we have submitted in an effort to help break the deadlock. Not only has the President never responded to them, but he is distorting them in public. This is how Mr. Anastasiades perceives unity.

AKEL never called on the President to negotiate anything about the natural gas before the solution of the Cyprus problem. Moreover, AKEL has never discussed, nor will it ever accept to discuss that a part of the Cypriot Exclusive Economic Zone belongs to Turkey. Can the President claim the same?
