The transfer of international confrontations to within Cyprus can only harm our country

AKEL C.C. Spokesperson Stefanos Stefanou on the approval of the Menendez-Rubio bill

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 28 June 2019, Nicosia

After the approval yesterday by the US Senate of the Menendez-Rubio bill, and indeed with the amendments that the President of the Republic characterised as unfortunate, it is now evident that the Republic of Cyprus is under heavy pressure.

Contrary to what the Anastasiades government and the Foreign Minister were trying to present, the situation now being created is extremely negative for Cyprus. A permanent member of the Security Council of the UN is demanding from our country that it harms its relations with other permanent members of the Security Council.

Even more tragic is the fact that the government participated and in effect encouraged this development with the meetings – informal and formal – of the Foreign Minister of Cyprus with the US Government. He himself was briefing that in those meetings he was discussing the lifting of the US arms embargo.

The government has allowed the creation of negative facts for our country. This is the objective and practical fact. The transfer of international confrontations to within Cyprus can only cause harm to our country. This is what common sense says. This is what historical experience also proves.
