The threats issued by ELAM have no effect on the Left and its supporters—the people of Cyprus know all too well from their bitter experience the hypocrisy of the far right
20 May 2026, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia
The statement by a candidate of the far-right ELAM party that they will propose the formation of a state body to monitor AKEL and other forces comes as no surprise. They can no longer restrain themselves or hide any longer. They openly declare that they have targeted democracy, the Left, and every dissenting voice in their sights. It is no coincidence, after all, that this threat comes at the same time as their leader’s ongoing vulgar attacks on the memory of Demetris Christofias.
All of this confirms what AKEL has been warning about for years. Whether dressed in black with hoods or well-dressed wearing ties, fascists do not change. They pose a danger to democracy and are poison to society. The far right, after all, has committed crimes in this country and is synonymous with treason and destruction.
That is precisely why its place is in isolation, not in the seats of parliament and power. The fact that DISY and DIKO President Nikolas Papadopoulos refuse to rule out any possibility of cooperation with ELAM is tantamount to opening the back door to fascism, and history will not forgive those who play such games.
AKEL is making it clear to everyone that ELAM’s threats have no effect on the Left and its supporters. The people of Cyprus, after all, know firsthand the cowardice of the far right. A strong AKEL, a powerful Left has been and will continue to be the response that the fascist-like elements fear.
