The significant differences do not make a government of wider acceptance possible

Statement of Georgos Loucaides, AKEL C.C. Spokesperson

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 13th January 2015, Nicosia

loukaides pplWith regards the proposal put forth by the President of the Republic for a government of wider acceptance, AKEL reiterates its position that this is impossible because of the significant differences that separate the positions of AKEL with the government policies being implemented, both on the Cyprus problem and concerning the issues of the economy and internal governance.

However what was and continues to be feasible is the need for a change in the political behaviour and mentality of the Anastasiades-DISY government so that the arbitrariness and dogmatism of the government and ruling forces is replaced by the sincere desire for consultation, consensus and respect for the positions of the political forces of the opposition.

Therefore, to the extent that it exists, even now, this sincere will for an understanding and consensus on the part of the government must be expressed through the respect in practice of the disagreement of the vast majority of the political forces and people against the DISY-Anastasiades government’s policy on privatizations, the National Health Scheme, the foreclosure of the primary residence, the reform of Local Self-government, the imposition of decrees for extending opening hours of shops and on a number of other principal issues.
