AKEL denounces Anastasiades’ acceptance of natural gas on the negotiating table

Statement by Georgos Loucaides, AKEL C.C. Spokesperson

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 14th January 2015, Nicosia

natural gasToday’s statements by UN Secretary-General’s Special Advisor Mr. Eide merely confirmed what is already very well known, namely that the President of the Republic agreed the issue of natural gas be put on the negotiating table. The refutation by the President of the “red line” correctly put our side was accompanied by the renewal of the Turkish NAVTEX. As a result, on the one hand the natural gas issue is now officially on the negotiating table and on the other Turkey, in reality undisturbed, is blatantly violating the sovereignty of the Republic of Cyprus.

The responsibility for these developments lies with Turkey. The implementation of Ankara’s plans however has been facilitated by the contradictions and expediencies of the inconsistent policy pursued by Anastasiades, which in fact is collapsing.
