The safeguarding and constant defence of human rights is part of the struggle and vision for a society of equality, solidarity and freedom

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which was signed on this day in 1948, is one of humanity’s most important achievements. However, despite the progress that has been recorded, modern societies like Cypriot society too, still have a long way to go in ensuring that human rights are implemented in practice and, in some aspects, even in legislation too.
The fight for human rights means waging the struggle against racism, sexism and homophobia, against state authoritarianism and police violence, but also against an economic system that is undermining the right to work, education, housing and health.
For AKEL, the safeguarding of modern social rights, the protection of democratic freedoms from disproportionate restrictive measures enforced due to the pandemic, the end of discrimination against LGBT people, the rights of people with disabilities and solidarity with refugees and migrants are among its principal priorities in its activity on human rights.
Human rights – both civil liberties and socio-economic rights – are universal, but also indivisible. That is precisely the reason why the safeguarding and constant defence of human rights is a component part of the struggle and the vision for a society of equality, solidarity and freedom.
