The road to economic recovery is the path of development and the fair distribution of the country’s wealth
Statement of Haris Polycarpou, member of the Economic Research Department of the C.C. of AKEL
AKEL C.C. Press Office, 11th September 2014, Nicosia
This is not the first time, and probably will not be the last, that the international community stresses that austerity policies and wage cuts do not address the economic crisis in developed economies. In its Trade and Development Report 2014, the United Nations identified the need for a different course in the global economy, so that the developed countries raise public investment and increase instead of reducing wages, in order to boost their internal demand.
We hope that these statements will by now cause the Government to reflect and change course on the economy, far from its blind faith in the dead-end path of austerity and targeting working people; that it will finally understand that the road to economic recovery is the path of development and the fair distribution of the country’s wealth.
