The resolution tabled by DIKO party on the Palestine issue is a selective double standards policy
Statements by the General Secretary of AKEL S.Stefanou:
8 April 2024, Astra radio station
The General Secretary of AKEL S.Stefanou, speaking to Astra radio station, was strongly critical of the absence of any condemnation of the ongoing genocide against the Palestinian people by Israel in the resolution tabled by DIKO party I Parliament, pointing out that the resolution, which was approved by the majority of the parliament, pursues a selective double standards policy.
On his part, DIKO President Nicolas Papadopoulos stressed that the resolution calls for a ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas war, noting that Cyprus will not solve the Middle East problem…
Asked to comment on criticisms from AKEL, he argued that AKEL never condemned the Hamas attack on Israel, except verbally by Mr Stefanou once in parliament.
Mr Papadopoulos is lying, Stefanos Stefanou replied, adding that he would send the President of DIKO all the written statements made by AKEL denouncing the Hamas attack on 7 October.
The General Secretary of AKEL S.Stefanou went on to state that it is unconceivable to call for a ceasefire but at the same time not to denounce the crimes being committed by Israel. This, he noted, is a selective double standards policy. He also characterised as a cheap and shallow excuse that we are calling for a ceasefire because we won’t solve the Middle East.
