The President’s reference to the 1974 coup as a “civil war” is unacceptable and condemnable

Statement by AKEL C.C. Spokesperson Stefanos Stefanou

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 2 October 2018, Nicosia

The reference by the President of the Republic to a “civil war” in his proclamation on the anniversary of the declaration of Cyprus independence is unacceptable and condemnable.

With this reference, the President equates the illegal murders of EOKA B with the defenders of legality and democracy, whom he insults in the worst way.

With the President’s reference to a “civil war”(Note: the 15th July 1974 fascist coup d’état executed by the Greek junta and EOKA B), the talk about paying tribute to all those who defended the Republic of Cyprus, legality and democracy, which the President had said, are null and void, degenerating without any substance.

We agree with the President of the Republic that only the establishment of a truly independent state will relieve us and the Turkish Cypriots from what we are tragically experiencing.

We wonder, however, what messages the overflights of Greek aircraft wanted to convey to both the Turkish Cypriot community and the international community at this very critical turning point that we are going through with regards the prospect of the negotiations and the solution of the Cyprus problem?

Does the President and the Government believe that the messages we are conveying during these critical times are correct?

Unless the President of the Republic, was not aware this year too of the overflights by Greek aircraft, as he had publicly admitted last year.
