The President’s handling is crucial in view of the Turkish side’s unacceptable positions
Statement by AKEL C.C. Spokesperson Stefanos Stefanou
AKEL C.C. Press Office, 28th April 2021, Nicosia
We are following developments in the Informal Meeting in Geneva with great concern, a concern which is provoked by the Turkish side’s positions. In view of these positions, the President of the Republic must handle developments in such a way so as to leave no room for the Turkish side to promote its positions and if it does insist on them it should be exposed, given that they are outside the framework of the Resolutions of the UN.
We have submitted since last December a specific proposal on what the President must do. Our proposal replies to how the negotiations should continue, but also how we can enhance our credibility and demonstrate our political will to the international community, to achieve a solution on the basis of the agreed framework, namely bizonal, bicommunal federation. AKEL believes that this proposal has never been so topical as developments are evolving. The President must make use of it.
We are not in a hurry to draw any conclusions, but we cannot hide our concern about developments so far as they are being formulated. We will await to judge the handlings that are being made from the end result and the Informal Meeting’s conclusion.
