The Political Bureau of AKEL on the latest developments surrounding the Cyprus problem
AKEL C.C. Press Office, 17th February 2017, Nicosia
The Political Bureau of the C.C. of AKEL met today focusing exclusively on the latest developments surrounding the Cyprus problem.
The Political Bureau of AKEL expresses its sadness and concern about yesterday’s negative developments in the negotiations. Given the damage already caused to the negotiating procedure, and to the efforts to solve the problem in general, the Political Bureau of AKEL considers that it is the responsibility and obligation of the two leaders to find ways of overcoming the problems for the continuation of the negotiations. The negotiations are at an advanced stage, important convergences have been recorded on various issues and it is imperative that the effort is completed. No one can say what the outcome will be. This will be determined in the negotiations. We point out that among the important issues that have been agreed by the two sides is that the solution will explicitly exclude enosis, partition and secession.
AKEL declares that it will be at the forefront of the common struggle of Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots for a solution that will liberate and reunite the country and people within the framework of a bicommunal, bizonal federation. AKEL is undertaking initiatives for the continuation of the negotiations. The meetings which the General Secretary of the C.C. of AKEL Andros Kyprianou had today with parties and figures of the Turkish Cypriot community were organized within the framework of these initiatives.
