The people of labour have nothing to gain from supporting candidates who serve the privileged few

Statement by Yiorgos Loucaides, AKEL Political Bureau member and AKEL-Left-New Forces Parliamentary Representative

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 2nd January 2018, Nicosia

The people of labour have nothing to gain from supporting candidates who all they did during the previous years was to serve the privileged few of their class. The people of labour put their trust in the candidacy of Stavros Mala

The people of labour in general, and those in the private sector in particular, have suffered the most from the economic crisis and the deregulation of labour relations imposed by the government of Nicos Anastasiades with the help of the duo of DIKO President Nicolas Papadopoulos-DISY President Averof Neophytou.

The next government of Stavros Malas will support the people of labour and more specifically the most vulnerable sections of the population who aren’t organized in trade unions and covered by collective agreements.

Within this framework, Stavros Malas will promote the legislative safeguarding of essential binding terms of employment such as the minimum wage, the 13th month salary payment, overtime compensation and the definition of mandatory holidays.

Stavros Malas will also proceed to the:

– Legislative enforcement of collective agreements and the possibility of extending them across the sectors,

– Linking the provision of incentives to companies to the respect for labour laws and collective agreements,

– Institutionalizing professional qualifications by introducing the job card.

The people of labour in these elections have nothing to gain from the candidates who all through the previous years were only serving the privileged few of their class. On the contrary, the people of labour trust Stavros Malas to ensure dignified terms and conditions of employment and to promote policies that serve the majority of the people and society.
