The opening of the checkpoints is a positive development

As AKEL, we welcome the decision taken by the two leaders to open all the checkpoints from next Friday. We welcome the mediation of the United Nations, as well as the valuable work of the Bicommunal Technical Committee on Health towards fulfilling the goal.
Undoubtedly, the decision represents a positive development, primarily with regards the relations between the two communities at various levels. At the same time, AKEL believes that the decision could have been taken earlier, something we have repeatedly called for.
Given the ongoing vaccination coverage in both communities, we hope that in due time vaccination would be added to the prerequisite for crossing checkpoints.
