The new Israeli atrocity shames human civilisation

1 March 2024, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia

The State of Israel has committed a new unprecedented atrocity against the Palestinian people of Gaza. The mass murder of more than 110 people and the injury of more than 700 during the distribution of food constitutes an atrocity that puts human civilisation to shame. Israel and its leadership must be held to account before international justice.

These crimes confirm what everyone should have realised all along: Israel does not and never has had the goal of “neutralizing Hamas.” The conscious goal of the State of Israel and the far-right Netanyahu government is the ethnic cleansing of the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip and the expansion of the occupation and colonalisation. This is precisely what the Israeli army has been doing for five months now, in flagrant violation of every concept of international and humanitarian law.

However, Israel would not have adopted this stand without the support and cover it has from the US and the European Union. The US has paralysed the UN Security Council with its veto, preventing it from taking action. The EU bears a grave responsibility for the audacity and shamelessness of the Israeli war machine and Ursula von der Leyen’s statements are nothing but a vulgar hypocrisy.

The continued silence of the Christodoulides government on the Israeli brutality shames our country and undermines its interests, as well as its international credibility. Also irreparably exposed are the political parties that yesterday – just a few hours after the new massacre – approved in Parliament the ratification of an inter-state agreement for the co-production of films with the Israeli state.

AKEL denounces for the umpteenth time the ongoing genocide committed by Israel and reiterates its full solidarity with the Palestinian people in their struggle for freedom and justice.
