The measures decided by the Parliament are a shield to protect society
Statement by AKEL C.C. Spokesperson Giorgos Koukoumas
The DISY government must not prevent them
15 July 2022, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia
The majority of the House of Representatives succeeded yesterday in approving important legislation that represent a shield to protect society against price increases and the arbitrariness of the banks. AKEL’s proposals for the abolition of double taxation on fuel and for a cap on fuel were approved. Another opposition proposal on VAT on electricity was adopted. A three-month suspension of the foreclosure of primary homes and small commercial premises was also decided.
Only the ruling DISY party voted against these proposals. It again chose to be on the side of the banks and big business. It has once again chosen to be indifferent to society, which is being crushed by the tsunami of price increases and the high cost of living.
We call on the President not to refer and report to the Supreme Court the legislation passed by the majority of the House, as he repeatedly does for any legislation that seeks to provide support to society. We call on the DISY government not to block these measures that households, working people and borrowers are waiting for.
At the same time, AKEL insists that much more is needed to tackle the rampantly escalating price increases. The initiatives taken by AKEL, both inside and outside Parliament, will continue even more decisively, given that the government itself continues to remain unmoved.
