The main goal must be to resume substantive negotiations
Statement by Aristos Damianou, AKEL MP on the Cyprus problem
AKEL C.C. Press Office, 25th April 2021, Nicosia
The criticality of the moments demands responsibility in the handling of the Cyprus problem and commitment to positions. The main goal of the upcoming informal five-party meeting in Geneva must be to create the preconditions for the resumption of substantive negotiations on the basis of the agreed framework of the solution. This must be the goal of the President of the Republic, to whom we wish good luck.
In the undesirable eventuality that this goal is not achieved, President Anastasiades must with his handlings ensure that the responsibility lies solely with the Turkish side. Only in this way will we be able to deal with Turkey’s possible aggression. Negative developments of the past must not be repeated when Turkey, relieved of responsibilities, violated the sovereign rights of the Republic of Cyprus in the Exclusive Economic Zone and proceeded to unacceptable new fait accompli in Varosha.
The General Secretary of the C.C. AKEL will go to Geneva with the intention making his own contribution as much as possible. It depends on the President himself whether he will make use of the presence of AKEL and its leader there.
We will of course judge the meeting in Geneva by the end result.
