The Justice Minister and Chief of Police must provide information about the death of a young worker from Bangladesh

11 April 2024, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia

AKEL calls on the Minister of Justice and the Chief of Police to investigate and inform about the circumstances under which the Bangladeshi worker died tragically yesterday in Limassol by jumping from the fifth floor in attempting to avoid a police search.

More specifically, the leadership of the Police Force and its political head must provide information as to whether the procedures provided for by the law were followed, whether force was used, whether the owner of the apartment was also searched too, but also on who was illegally employing the migrants all this time.

The death of the Bangladeshi worker reveals in the most tragic way how the various rings/gangs are getting richer through the exploitation of migrants as cheap labour that they bring to Cyprus in various ways and which fuels illegal and undeclared work. The whole truth must be revealed and the State must take on its responsibilities.
