The government’s insensitivity to price increases can’t continue which puts pressure on households and small businesses

Statement by AKEL C.C. Spokesperson Giorgos Koukoumas

18 April 2024, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia

The Christodoulides government ended the fuel subsidy measure and now people are faced with ongoing increases in the price of petrol and diesel. Since the beginning of April – even before the escalation of tensions in the Middle East – consumers in Cyprus have been paying 14.7 cents more for petrol and 9.7 cents more for diesel. Without a doubt, it is to be expected that this new wave of fuel price increases will trigger a chain of other increases in other goods and services.

AKEL reiterates that the fuel subsidy measure must be brought back immediately.

The government’s insensitivity to price increases/hikes that exerts so much pressure on households and small businesses can’t continue. We all know that the state coffers have increased revenues of hundreds of millions of euros amassed from consumers, who double-pay for price increases. One wonders why the government refuses to allocate some of these revenues to alleviate society and prevent a new explosion of price hikes.
