The government’s incompetence is causing hardship for society

Not long ago, the Minister of Energy assured us that we had sufficient electricity and that those who spoke of problems in the energy sector were scaremongers. Now, the government —including the Minister himself —has disappeared and hasn’t apologized to the citizens who are suffering from constant power cuts.

As far as the issue of electricity is concerned, we see the same pattern from the government as with the fires. Namely, assurances and big empty talk, followed by disaster and problems. Once again, it is clear that we have an incompetent and inadequate government which, despite its constant statements, has done nothing substantive on the ground and limits itself to engaging in communication tricks. But these tricks do not solve the problems. They are not bringing in natural gas to generate electricity. They are not moving forward with the storage of electricity. They aren’t modernizing the power plant in Dekelia. They are not completing the terminal in Vasilikos, and consumers continue to pay high prices for electricity.

The responsibilities of the Christodoulides government and the Anastasiades-DISY government for this whole unacceptable situation are enormous.
