Cyprus is exposed to energy risks – The previous and current governments bear enormous responsibility

12 August 2025, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia

Unresolved and serious problems in the electricity sector have led to the current situation, with power cuts and electricity needs are only just being met “by the skin of our teeth.” This is the price of the expediencies served and the incompetence of the previous and current governments. This is the reality that clearly contradicts the recent statements by the responsible Minister that those who are talking about power shortages are scaremongers.

In fact, this situation will continue in the coming years as long as the implementation of critical investments, such as the upgrading of Dhekelia, storage, and the arrival of natural gas, is delayed.

AKEL stresses once again that the energy sector is not a place for any experimentations. The economy and society are paying the price for this inaction.

A commitment to a more comprehensive strategic plan is needed, which will ensure, first and foremost, sufficiency and security, with the aim of providing cheap and affordable energy for all.

Finally, AKEL recognizes and expresses its appreciation to the workers of the semi-governmental Cyprus Electricity Authority AHK, who, despite the shortcomings and difficulties they face, are making every effort to maintain the electricity supply.
