The government should seek the reason why in the policies it is implementing

Statement by AKEL C.C. Spokesperson Stefanos Stefanou on the possible rejection of its 2021 State Budget

AKLE C.C. Press Office, 10th December 2020, Nicosia

If the Anastasiades-DISY government manages to become the first government in the country’s history to see its budget rejected, it should seek the reason why in the policies it is implementing and in the scandals that have and are being revealed, but also in the arrogance characterising it. That is to say, in everything that is daily alienating the government from political forces, but above all from society itself. Besides, people know that Democracy and our Constitution don’t have deadlocks.

It is the responsibility of each government to build consensus in Parliament, far from any blackmailing dilemmas and scaremongering. But how can consensus be built when the government ruling forces, through referrals (of Bills approved) to the Supreme Court, annuls what the House of Representatives approves on crucial social issues such as protection from evictions and foreclosures, the issue of opening hours in the retail trade?

AKEL has with consistency always voted against the budgets tabled by the Anastasiades government, guided by the aspirations and demands of society and not the government’s artificial dilemmas.
