If there is no state intervention, the backbone of the Cyprus economy will be destroyed
AKEL on the government measures to deal with the pandemic
AKEL C.C. Press Office, 10th December 2020, Nicosia
The government must sense that the new measures it has announced will have painful consequences for small and medium-sized enterprises, many of which run the risk of never being able to reopen. The following need to be done immediately:
- A comprehensive and effective support scheme for small and medium-sized enterprises that responds to the situation should be elaborated.
- A solution must be given to the issues of rents and bank installments that are suffocating professionals and households.
- The government must stop blocking the implementation of the laws approved by the House of Representatives for the protection of vulnerable groups from evictions and foreclosures.
If the small businesses, the self-employed, small shops and restaurants are not saved through state intervention, the backbone of the Cyprus economy will be destroyed, with unprecedented consequences for Cypriot society in general.
