The government should have sought to protect Russia-Cyprus relations

Statement by AKEL C.C. Spokesperson Stefanos Stefanou

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 17 November 2018, Nicosia

If the Anastasiades-DISY government considers Russian-Cypriot political and economic relations as very important, as the Finance Minister notes, its reaction should have been different. The reaction should have sought to protect Russia-Cyprus relations and not promote conflict by taking swipes and making suggestive remarks.

In truth, what is the government’s reference to Cyprus’ European orientation, which is self-evident given that we are an EU Member State, aiming at? Is it perhaps aiming at the government’s full harmonization with the perception and policy that is dominant inside the EU that Russia is an adversary?

We agree that Cyprus must apply international standards and obligations. However, how is it that Russian capital and companies leaving Cyprus are going to other European countries, such as Germany?

Is it perhaps the criteria and standards are different there?

How are the relations between Cyprus and Russia affected by the way the situation is developing?

How is the Cyprus economy being affected by Russian companies and capital fleeing Cyprus?

The government must give answer to these questions and act accordingly so as to protect our country’s vital interests.
