The government must inform the people and political leaders of its intentions regarding Trump’s invitation

The Christodoulides government was quick to celebrate the invitation it received from the US to the so-called “Board of Peace”, claiming that it constitutes “a recognition of Cyprus’ role in the Middle East” and that “it acquires particular political significance when this recognition comes from the United States.” Obviously, the government did not realize how dangerous Trump’s plans to establish an international organization to replace the UN are for international security and stability.
The “Board of Peace” that Trump is setting up constitutes an unprecedented attempt to further undermine the UN and flout international law, while essentially attempting to institutionalize American hegemony at the expense of the states and peoples of the world.
The government must even belatedly comprehend the real meaning behind Trump’s invitation and take into account the disagreements and objections of many states and governments. First and foremost, it must consider the even more adverse position that states such as the Republic of Cyprus will find themselves in — which bases its existence, its foreign policy and its struggle for liberation on international law — in the event that the UN is rendered useless and international law is further discredited.
AKEL calls on the government to inform the people and the political leadership of its intentions regarding Trump’s invitation.
