The government is creating illusions instead of acting preemptively

Statement by Christos Christofides, member of the Political Bureau of AKEL, on the government’s foreign policy

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 21 July 2019, Nicosia

Our foreign policy is judged by the end result and not by communication type fabrications. That’s why reality is harsh. The government ruling forces were advertising many and various things, creating illusions and refusing to act in a preemptive manner. They spent their time engaging in communication games. Today, our homeland is paying the cost of their negligence.

– They were telling our people that our Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) has been secured. Today Turkey is roaming in our EEZ.

– They were telling us that Turkey cannot proceed to drillings for political and technical reasons. Today, two drillings by Turkey are currently under way.

– They were telling us that Cyprus has forged strong alliances that supposedly safeguard our interests. Today, Turkey’s provocative actions are reaching a climax without a substantial international reaction.

– They were telling us that they were expecting severe sanctions and “targeted measures” to be approved by the EU against Turkey. We are still waiting for these “targeted measures”, at the same time as Turkey is ridiculing the measures adopted by Brussels.

– They were leaking various reports about a French military base and the conclusion of military co-operations. Today these are proving to be all lies.

Unfortunately for our homeland, the government ruling forces are constructing false images to promote personal agendas with the help of the mass media, whilst in practice they have failed in the field of foreign policy. And the criterion of truth is actions and deeds.
