The government destroys unity by honoring the 1974 coup d’ etat orchestrators
AKEL C.C. Press Office, 3rd November 2014, Nicosia
President Anastasiades concluded a speech he made yesterday declaring that “we have an duty towards the leader of EOKA, who we honour, to hand over to our childrn a united, free, democratic and prosperous Cyprus”. Obviously the President forgot that Grivas[1] was dreaming of a “united” Cyprus to suit partitionist plans, such as the Acheson Plan[2]; a “democratic” Cyprus serving his plans for a coup d’etat and his orders for the murder of AKEL members and cadres for political reasons.
This reference of President Anastasiades, as well as the references made by the Minsiter of Interior Socrates Hasikos in his eulogy for the 12 commandos[3], destroy any possibility for unity. President Anastasiades should not forget that he himself is above anyone else responsible for forging this unity.
Unfortunately, the government of Anastasiades and the DISY Rally party has very early on forgotten its pre-election pledges. The slogans about “collectivity” and “consultative democracy” were forgoten in his pre-election speeches. Now the people are following a Government that does not hesitate in levelling both History and the fighters for Democracy, and equating the heroes with the traitors; a Government that is incapable of overcoming its erronous past, by behaving autocratically, arrogantly and contemptuously to anyone who disagrees with it.
