The government allocates just 2.2% of GDP for the public health system, the lowest percentage across the EU

Statement by the Head of the Health Affairs Bureau of the C.C. of AKEL Athos Georgiou on the President of the Republic’s interview to “Phileleftheros” newspaper

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 27 May 2018, Nicosia

econ soc healthThe misinformation presented by the President of the Republic regarding the real needs in the Public Health system is unfortunately continuing. His own Ministers are stating that the Public Health system is collapsing. To restore the truth, just 791 doctors serve 70% of the population, while 2,500 doctors in the private sector serve 30% of the population.

We mustn’t forget that the government allocates just 2.2% of the GDP for the public health system, which is the lowest percentage across the European Union. Let therefore not look elsewhere for those responsible because they themselves are the ones that have driven the Public Health system to the worst position in Europe.
