The General Secretary of the Central Committee of AKEL met with the new Chargé d’Affaire of Syria

The General Secretary of the Central Committee of AKEL, Stefanos Stefanou, met today with the new Syrian Chargé d’Affaires General in Cyprus, Ammar Awad. The General Secretary of AKEL was accompanied by Vera Polycarpou, Head of the International Relations and European Policy of the C.C. of AKEL.

During the meeting, the Syrian diplomat briefed the General Secretary of the Central Committee on the situation in Syria following the devastating earthquake that struck the country in February with tragic results.  The need to meet the needs of the thousands of earthquake victims and to care for the injured remain very high, while the sanctions that have been imposed on Syria are making it difficult to send humanitarian aid. Finally, the Syrian diplomat thanked AKEL and Cyprus in general for sending humanitarian aid.

Stefanos Stefanou reiterated AKEL’s solidarity with the people of Syria, who are facing the huge humanitarian consequences of the devastating earthquake, and assured that AKEL would continue its efforts to support them. The General Secretary of AKEL also underlined AKEL’s position against foreign interventions in Syria, which have brought enormous humanitarian and material destruction and are making it difficult to heal the wounds.
