The General Secretary of AKEL A. Kyprianou replies to journalist’s questions on the Cyprus problem
AKEL C.C. Press Office, 23 April 2019, Nicosia
Asked whether AKEL has any information about the discussion underway over the past few days regarding the possibility of a new international conference being convened by the UN this summer, the General Secretary of the C.C. of AKEL replied:
Quite the contrary, when this question was put to the President of the Republic at the last meeting of the National Council, the President of the Republic himself was categorical. Namely that such a development is not expected, and that what the UN Secretary General Special envoy on Cyprus Mrs. Lute had to propose she did propos and that unfortunately it did not yield results. I see this as part of the information being leaked by the governing Democratic Rally party and on the part of the government camp in an attempt to convince a section of public opinion that something is to be expected so as to keep the hope alive after the elections. And of course this is being said in the run-up to the elections. We at least we were told that we shouldn’t expect any developments.
